1. Background

I am one of the architects of the BC Family Law Act. The new federal Divorce Act changes largely follow BCs approach. I have worked in government (BC & Nunavut) to further law reform initiatives, as well as private family law practice. I therefore have a unique and in-depth knowledge of the family laws. Law reform is my passion-project: Be The Change.  ✨

2. Focus

In private practice, I focus on FAMILY BUILDING/fertility law to help those whose path to parenthood includes assisted reproduction, & COOPERATIVE SEPARATION: Strategy Sessions & Separation Agreements, and Remote Family Mediation. My new service is EXPRESS MEDIATION, for those separating who mostly agree but just need a bit of help sorting out the details and challenging issues to resolve their separtion. I feel ever inspired to help intentional family-building. And I believe that helping people un-couple graciously and cooperatively is truly meaningful important work. ✨

3. Credentials

I have been a lawyer for 17 years. I received my law degree from the University of Victoria, on beautiful Vancouver Island, BC.  I am certified to practice law in British Columbia & Nunavut.  I am accredited as a Family Law Mediator &  Arbitrator by the BC Law Society. ✨

4. Teaching

Currently, I co- teach the Family Law course at the Univversity of Victoria / UVic Law School with the delightful Christine Murray. I regularly present/speak and contribute to education materials on family law, law reform, and fertility law. I love it. ✨

5. Making It

I went to university and  law school as a single mother, while working part time and raising my son, on student loans. I look back and can’t understand how I did it sometimes, but eternally grateful that I made it, against the odds. I now am the excited gramma of a little guy who is the cutest baby on earth (I may be biased.) ✨

6. Hobbies

My party trick is I can hoola-hoop fire (but it’s been a long time.) Now, I’m an avid photographer; the photos on Michelle Kinney Law Webpage  are mine. I love adventuring, and travel both regionally and internationally whenever I can. I have a campervan named Loo-Lou that is my pride and joy. When I am at home, I love a good renovation project. ✨

7. Where I Have Lived

I grew up on an apple orchard in the Okanagan, with my horse Sonya and my dog Jay. I lived in Victoria BC 20+ years. I moved to Nunavut in 2020 for a year, and continue to serve as a lawyer there. I have travelled the world most of the last 3 years. I  am currently based in Victoria, Vancouver Island, BC.
