Northwest Territories Family Mediation program and Michelle Kinney Law

I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve been appointed as a mediator with the Northwest Territories Mediation Program. Building on my experience in family law and mediation—and my commitment to respectful, collaborative dispute resolution—I look forward to supporting NWT families and communities in finding durable, interest‑based solutions.

About the NWT Family Law Mediation Program

The Government of the Northwest Territories offers up to nine hours of free, voluntary mediation to parents, guardians, and others who have a stake in a child’s life. Both parties must consent before the process begins, and the mediator’s role is neutral—helping you craft your own parenting plan, child‑support terms, or other family‑law solutions in the best interests of your children.

TIP!
► Many people find it helpful to attend the free workshop Parenting After Separation before mediation starts. I strongly encourage all parents to take this course after separation to ensure you are putting your children first and reducing the impacts of separation on them.

Why Mediation Matters in the Northwest Territories

Court battles are costly, slow, and often hard on families—especially kids. Mediation gives parents a private, solution‑focused space to reach durable agreements while keeping control in their own hands. Access to Justice is the North is complicated by limitted resources and long distances between communities. Remote, accessible family mediation can meaningfully bridge this gap and improve access to family justice.

Michelle Kinney Law also provides private Mediation Services in Nunavut and the Yukon. See below for more information.

How My Mediation Model Fits In

I’m delighted to join the territorial roster of mediators and to bring my Mediation approach to the North. My Mediation model is:

Issues We Can Resolve Together in Mediation

If you still have unused hours in the program after settling parenting matters, we can even address property issues—maximising every free minute.

Who Is Eligible—and How to Start

Check eligibility on the program site (link above).

Both parties agree to mediate (the service is voluntary).

You will be matched with a mediator from the NWT Mediator Roster.

If you are matched with me, we’ll schedule our pre‑mediation meetings by secure video and plan the mediation sessions to meet both parties’ goals and needs.

Not Eligible For the Program?

If you live in the Northwest Territories and want to resolve family‑law issues outside of court and collaboratively, but you are not elgible for the free mediation program (which is only available if you have children), you can still use Michelle Kinney Law’s mediation services.

Michelle Kinney Law provides remote mediation packages at reasonable rates. Together we can turn conflict into cooperative, forward‑looking agreements—so your family can focus on the future, not the fight.
