In 2020, I, Michelle, moved to Iqaluit and was called to the Bar in Nunavut. I worked for legal counsel in the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Justice.
Although I am now regularly based in Victoria on Vancouver Island, BC, I continue to serve Nunavut by offering remote online legal services for family law matters as well as law reform and access to justice initiatives.
I acknowledge the challenges with accessing legal services in the North — and developed my online service model with Nunavut’s needs in mind. I provide unique online remote services, including Express Mediation for separating families, to help couples access legal assistance to resolve their disputes fairly and efficiently outside of court.
I received my law degree from the University of Victoria, British Columbia, in 2006 and am accredited as a Family Lawyer, Family Law Mediator and Family Law Arbitrator.
As a settler, I, Michelle, am grateful for the opportunity to have lived in Nunavut, to have travelled to numerous communities in the territory of the Inuit. I am grateful to continue work, play and travel in the land that is Nunavut. It burned a place in my heart. Its people and its stunning beauty forever impacted me and changed who I was. As a Southerner, I deeply respect the importance of acknowledging Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and reflecting Inuit Societal Values when working in Nunavut and with Nunavummiut.
